I am so excited! Finally, I don't have to travel hours to see her (though I'll gladly do that)

Did Peters, whose character is a Broadway baby transplanted to Ireland, have any qualms about playing a lesbian, even in a family-friendly movie? "I was more nervous about playing Jewish," she notes, adding her trademark giggle. "And having to be an actress who read Chekhov."---this just cracks me up

I am BEYOND stoked for this concert. I've been wanting her to come to Grand Rapids (my hometown) for YEARS. DeVos Hall is the PERFECT venue for her and she is wildly loved and praised by the large theatre community in Grand Rapids. Can't wait to see some of you there!

And another new concert a week later in Tyler, Texas. They can't seem to get enough of her in Texas.

This is so exciting!!! I'm going to try to go to both concerts. It's not often big Broadway stars come all the way out to Texas.

Tyler! Tyler? Crazy, y'all. Tyler isn't known for much more than its roses and is a small town - less than 100,000 in population. It's about 1.5 hours east of Dallas. I've been there and there's not much to do, that's for sure. But maybe since she'll be at UT Tyler, this will get her to UT Austin Performing Arts Center and then down to San Antonio to perform at the Majestic. I'd fly home for that one. It is true that Texans love Bernadette - big personality, big hair, big...well y'all know.

Sincerely ... great that she's doing all those concerts ... but I, for one, am willing to lay out the dollars, euros, pounds, to buy this woman a passport.

as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....

Scottie, did you see that concert that Bernadette did in London? The one she released on DVD. or has anyone else actually see it live?

Not to take over the post, but how is our TX contigent? I lived in a Houston suburb (Humble) for almost two years, so I've been keeping up with The Chronicle and KHOU. I heard that DOT is preparing for contraflow in case Houston and Galveston need to evacuate.

(Watching Dean now, as is anyone in the TX/LA Gulf Coast area or have family there.)

Kate, It's hard to believe that Bernadette's Royal Festival Hall concert here in London was almost a decade ago --- she had been here many times before but that was her concert debut in this country. It was a total sell-out and considering most people here in the UK don't even know who she is -- that is pretty amazing.
Now that she seems to be doing nothing but concerts I'm wondering why she hasn't brought her new concert performance here.

It also seems weird that this great Broadway star has never appeared in a West End theatre. God knows we get every other US actor treadng the boards here --- some great ones but also those of little talent (a West End run must look good on their CV).

as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....

I think Karen and others will agree with me when I make the statement that it seems that Bernadette's people - mgr, press agent, et al - do not seem to pursue enough for Bernadette. I don't think that she is agressive enough to get them to get her more or better gigs. This is my perception and observation of the last few years since becoming a devotee and going to her concerts here and there. Most of her concerts over the last few years seem to be in fairly small venues for special events, usually fundraisers. I'm sure that this is to her liking or maybe this is all that is possible. Most Broadway stars are in the same boat if you look at who tours and do special concerts (LuPone, Buckley, Stokes Mitchell, et al). Even the great legend Chita Rivera can't keep a gig for lack of interest outside of New York - the tour of her show bombed and her recently announced gig in the West End has been postponed. Really Barbara Cook is the only one who sustains a fairly regular, popular concert series that sells out in huge venues (I'm talking Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, the Met). As far as albums go, Bernadette is pretty par for the course as well. We want more and she is definitely deserving and worthy of more, but c'est la vie, no? My biggest wish is to see Bernadette, other than a regular Broadway show, play the cabaret - Feinstein's or the Carlyle or even the Blue Note - would be sublime.

I emailed Patti LuPone several years ago-I asked her if she had any plans to do a concert in New Orleans. She replied that she would love to do a concert in New Orleans, but the venues were the ones who booked the performers. No venue in the area had contacted her people to arrange a booking.

This is true and sometimes its independent booking agents - this is how it works for Broadway show tours as well, both equity and non-equity (and opera singers and classical performers). And it's all a big incestuous mess of regional theatres and university performance halls with subscription packages. Some theatres and companies are now even resorting to blackmail - the only way to see certain performers is by purchasing an entire subscription package. They are counting on selling out based on one performer to sustain an entire season, i.e. the Chicago Lyric Opera is doing this with Renee Fleming in La Traviata this season. I even learned that it can be an independent producer who is willing to book a venue to bring in a production, whether its one performance or or a series, but it's outrageously expensive which is probably one reason Bernadette, Patti, et al do usually tour based on a special event - or a producer can book for a theatre for just a fee - the producer approaches the theatre and offers the event for a fee and then the theatre does all of the publicity and ticket brokering. This is why all of the big pop and rock stars that tour always have a big sponsor (or remember why when Bernadette played Symphony Hall it was part of a celebrity series sponsored by some bank or another).

It seems to me Bernadette's playing smaller venues at the moment to. Not that I'm complaining (I live in Texas). Even though she's not in a show right now, she does stay pretty busy as I think we can all agree. My theory is that she's taking smaller shows so that she can focus on Broadway Barks and her new CD. These last few years probably haven't been easy and she's is almost 60 (even though God knows she doesn't look it). Hmmmm...I don't know. She may be waiting until her new CD drops to play bigger venues. And like everyone said, booking a Broadway performer (no matter how amazing) is probably difficult outside of New York.

And I totally agree, I would love to see her do some cabaret.

I forgot to add this to my last post...

Jenn, Texas has been for most of the summer been getting nothing but rain. We were lucky because we got about a week or two without rain, but then just the other day it started back up again. We have I think two hurricanes on the way which are going to hit our coast, which really sucks because they've had a lot of trouble with flooding. There has been some talk of evacuations (I haven't heard as much because I live in north Texas). The problem is Texas is such a big state and so much has been hit/is going to be hit, that finding places to go is difficult. That's really all I know at the moment. It's really sad because so many of the Katrina evacuees came to Texas, and most specifically Houston.

Kate, I was in Houston when Rita threatened the city, so I well remember how difficult it is to evacuate that area. That city floods at the drop of a hat-there's nowhere for the rain to go. I heard that they are setting up contraflow on I-10 now. I contacted my friends in Houston-hoping to hear from them when they get home from work tonight (they are north of Houston, which traditionally doesn't flood as much as the other areas). I'm in New Orleans for the week visiting my family. I think an update was supposed to be posted at 4, so I'm waiting for the 5 PM news now!
